Dog Cognition: A Report from Kyoto

August 8, 2013 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Dog CognitionDog Cognition – Live From Kyoto, Japan

Speaker: Dr. Kazuo Fujita

In this talk, Dr. Fujita presents studies on various cognitive functions in dogs conducted as an activity of CAMP-WAN, Companion Animal Mind Project – Wide Area Network, Kyoto University (see https://sites.google.com/site/kyotocampwan2/home — Japanese only website). Topics include: episodic use of incidentally formed memory, multimodal recognition of owners and genders, understanding of social characteristics of humans, inference of physical environment from social information, and behavioral characteristics related to genetic variations. We find wonderful intelligence and behavioral flexibility of dogs in many of the tests but at the same time limitations of their cognitive abilities.

Human Body Language and Dogs: Tell Your Dog What to Do Without Talking

Having behavioral challenges with your dog?

You may be unknowingly sending signals you aren’t aware of on a daily basis that cause your dog to react in a certain way. Our body language, the sound of our voice, our facial expressions, and our thoughts, conscious and subconscious are continuously sending “messages” to the animals in our lives, and they respond accordingly. Whether you are a professional and deal with other peoples’ dogs, or are a pet owner and have personal challenges with your canine companion,  this class will prove to be one of the most valuable assets you have experienced. Class content will consist of  specific information along with supporting photos and videos depicting animals reactions to human communication.

This program will outline, how human body language impacts the reactions of animals. Based on scientific studies of human body language experts, Jo Maldonado has adapted the same principles to animals with remarkable results showing heightened responses of animals. Jo Maldonado has delivered countless lectures demonstrating how a mere shift in human energy immediately changes the behavior of a dog.  Content includes specific body postures, movements, facial expressions, thoughts and sound/voice with validation from photos and videos supporting each.

Communication between dogs and humans: naturally smart or good learners?

July 25, 2013 By Cheryl Aguiar |

communication between dogs and humansCommunication between dogs and humans

Speaker:  Mariana Bentosela, Ph.D.

Domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) have shown remarkable communicative skills towards humans.  These abilities allow dogs to solve different problems and achieve desired objects in their ordinary lives. However, the mechanisms underlying the communication between dogs and human capacities are still unclear. There is an intense debate between high-level and low-level explanations, regarding the role of domestication and ontogeny (or life history) in the development of these skills.  In this talk I will describe several approaches to study the role of learning and experiences during ontogeny on interspecific communicative responses in dogs.  Specifically, three kinds of studies will be discussed: 1. the effects of some associative learning processes upon communicative behaviors (reinforcement, extinction, omission, and stimulus competence), 2.  the comparison of the performance of dogs with different levels of social contact with humans (shelter vs. pet dogs) and 3. the comparison between dogs and other non-domesticated canids like foxes and wolves.  These investigations not only contribute to the debate regarding the mechanisms of communication between dogs and humans, but also provide relevant information to applied areas where dogs are found.
