Behavior Consulting and Declawed Cats

December 6, 2016 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Behavior Consulting Declawed CatsWhether you work with dogs in households with cats, or you work with cats only, if your clients are in the United States or Canada, you will face a few conundrums related to phalangectomy procedures (onychectomy/declawing): Behavior consulting and declawed cats. Millions of cats have been declawed, many of which have undiagnosed physical ailments related to those procedures.  Your clients may not have successful behavioral outcomes if their animal’s health is not cared for and it is ethical for behavior professionals to consider the animal’s physical wellbeing as the first step to any behavior modification plan. However, the entire topic is considered controversial by many people, including some of your clients and their vets. This means that you not only have to recognize evidence that a cat is having physical trouble related to the amputations, you also need to broach the topic without inciting animosity between the humans or overstepping your professional boundaries. Helping these cats will require the owner, vet, and behavior consultant to work together as a team.  You are the person to make that happen!

At the end of this talk, students will be able to:

  • Recognize multiple signs that a declawed cat needs medical intervention
  • Discuss medical and environmental interventions in a non-judgmental manner
  • Encourage teamwork between themselves, their clients and veterinarians
  • Provide further peer-to-peer resources to clients’ vets

Speaker: Jacqueline Munera, CCBC, PCBC, CAP2

How We Know Animals Think and Feel, and Why This Matters

October 25, 2016 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Do animals think and feelDo Animals Think and Feel?

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a fish? Or a parrot, dolphin, or an elephant?  Do they experience thoughts that are similar to ours, or have feelings of grief and love? These are tough questions, but scientists are answering them. Join us in this fascinating webinar by author and contributing correspondent to Science and National Geographic Virgina Morell, M.Sc.

Speaker:  Virginia Morell, M.Sc

This webinar was recorded live Webinar November 15th, 2016 and is now available as a recording.

In this talk, students will learn:

  • why animals were once regarded as unfeeling robots and how discoveries in the field by well-known scientists, such as Jane Goodall and Cynthia Moss, and others, such as Nigel Franks, Irene Pepperberg, and Jaak Panksepp have changed that perception;
  • how scientists have discovered the cognitive abilities of various species from ants to birds to dolphins and canines;
  • how they have discovered the emotional side of animals, with a particular focus on elephants; and,
  • Why these discoveries matter and why individual animals matter.

The social lives of cats: What science says about cat behavior and the human-cat bond

June 19, 2016 By Cheryl Aguiar |

CAt-HumanCat Behavior and the Human-Cat Bond

Although domestic cats and humans have lived with one another for thousands of years, relatively little scientific research has been conducted with cats- especially when compared to the body of research on the domestic dog. Many questions regarding cat behavior, especially their social behavior with humans, remain unanswered. Currently, pet cats outnumber dogs by almost 10 million in the US alone and millions of cats live in shelters or are free-roaming outdoors. Over 3.4 million cats enter already crowded shelters each year and of those surrendered by owners, approximately 27% are surrendered due to behavioral issues or incompatibility between cat and owner. Therefore, there are many applied benefits from future research in this area. This talk will cover our scientific understanding of various aspects of cat behavior and cognition and current research being conducted in this area. We will also discuss ways to utilize this knowledge to improve cat welfare and strengthen the human-cat bond.

Speaker: Kristyn Vitale Shreve

Available as a recording, OnDemand

Access is for 32 days, but additional time is granted on request.

We will examine various topics on cat cognition, behavior and the human-cat bond including:

  • cat social behavior
  • use of olfactory signals in cat behavior
  • cat personality
  • the human-cat relationship
  • attachment bonds
  • cat sensitivity to human cues
  • kitten training & socialization classes at Oregon State University
  • cat training
  • applying scientific knowledge to improve cat welfare
  • current cat research and future directions

Living with Dogs that Fight

April 4, 2016 By Cheryl Aguiar |

living with dogs that fightLiving in a War Zone:  Life with two dogs intent on harming one another – Living with Dogs that Fight

For almost 6 years, my husband and I shared our lives with two wonderful dogs who would quite willingly have killed one another and who nearly succeeded three times.  This lecture will discuss the factors that lead to this situation, the steps we took to attempt to address this issue, the failure of management, and the fallout in our own lives that resulted from living with dogs that fight to the point of almost killing each other.

Speaker: Sue Alexander CPT-KSA, CBCC-KA, CDBC

Available as a recording, OnDemand

Access is for 32 days, but additional time is granted on request.

Learn about:

  •          factors that contribute to conflict between resident dogs
  •          management and training solutions that were attempted
  •          management and training solutions that were discarded
  •          living with dogs that fight
  •          factors that prohibit resolution of that conflict
  •          the impact on quality of life for the family and all the dogs in the home
  •          the impact on end of life decisions for the older of the two dogs involved

Individual Differences in Dog Cognition: Psychological Underpinnings and Practical Applications

January 27, 2016 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Individual Differences in Dog CognitionUncover the patterns of individual differences in dog cognition

Research in the last two decades has yielded remarkable insights into the minds of dogs.  Most notably, dogs have been shown to possess a variety of human-like social skills not commonly reported in other nonhuman animals. In contrast, dogs’ abilities for reasoning about the physical world appear to be comparatively unremarkable.  Despite these species-level characterizations, individual dogs vary tremendously in their behavior and cognition.  Most research to date has focused on describing general features of dog cognition, and individual differences have largely been treated as ‘error variance’.  I will describe a line of research that aims to uncover the patterns of individual differences in dog cognition, and to systematically understand these patterns in terms of variance in multiple independent cognitive constructs. I will first compare the patterns of individual differences in dogs, nonhuman apes, and human children, and discuss the implications of these data for understanding dog cognitive evolution. I will then turn to how the study of individual differences in dog cognition can be applied to real world problems to identify dogs well matched to various working roles (e.g. assistance dogs, explosive detection dogs).

Course Objectives:

  • Overview of the dog’s ability to possibly “reason” and the fact that individual dogs appear to vary tremendously in cognitive abilities.
  • Examine a line of research that aims to uncover the patterns of individual differences in dog cognition.
  • Compare the patterns of individual differences in dogs, nonhuman apes, and human children, and discuss the implications of these data for understanding dog cognitive evolution.
  • Learn how the individual differences in dog cognition can be applied to real world problems to identify dogs well matched to various working roles (e.g. assistance dogs, explosive detection dogs).
