Windows of opportunity: A New Look at Canine Socialization

January 14, 2021 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Socializing PuppiesSocializing Puppies

Veterinarians and trainers often recommend “socialization” to owners of young puppies as part of standard education and care. Most recommendations are focused on exposing the puppies to a variety of stimuli including children, novel objects and body handling. It is important to recognize that socialization outcomes are affected by more than just these experiences. Long term socialization and adult behavior patterns can be affected by genetic influences as well as by specific experiences during multiple developmental stages including the prenatal, neonatal and early socialization periods.   Current research and recommendations will be discussed.

Speaker: Christopher Pachel, DVM, DACVB

Available as a recording.

This course will address the potential effects of, and research regarding:

  • Prenatal care on adult behavior
  • Neonatal handling on adult behavior
  • Genetics and socialization on adult behavior
  • Appropriate and inappropriate interactions during the primary socialization period
  • The impact of socialization and ongoing learning in adult dogs

Cost: $25.00

Approaching Animal Hospice: Geriatric & Special Needs Care for our Animal Companions

September 3, 2018 By Cheryl Aguiar |

IMAG0103Approaching Animal Hospice: Geriatric & Special Needs Care for our Animal Companions

Learn how to care for your animal as it ages or when it needs special care.

Offered by Spirits in Transition™, this beautiful 10 session course is for the animal lover who wants to prepare for supporting their animal companion through it’s senior years and other times of special needs. The animal hospice care certificate course teaches you to provide end-of-life care for animal friends.
The class details options we may still have in situations when we are told “nothing else can be done”. It is also a great educational resource for those offering related professional support services when aiming for a quality of care similar to what is available for human family members.

Course Information:This informative course is taught by veterinarian Ella Bittel. Ella is recognized by her peers as a leader in animal hospice and has presented on that topic and the one leading up to it, geriatric and special-needs care, at numerous veterinary conferences. Ella has specialized in and shares from her experience working with holistic modalities for over 30 years, among them veterinary acupuncture and chiropractic, cranio-sacral work, homeopathy, herbs, essential oils, TTOUCH and energy medicine techniques adapted from Donna Eden.

This SPIRITS in Transition™ online class gives information that may make it possible for your animal, whether dog, cat, horse or other, to live a happy and content life for many months or even years longer than it may otherwise. How is that possible? Fortunately support options have greatly increased to address the needs of our senior animals as well as younger ones who might end up requiring special care earlier on. For you to be familiar with those options can be life saving for your animal friends or those whom you serve professionally. We may hope that every veterinarian would explain all these options to us as need arises, however many of these options are not part of what is taught in veterinary school.
In this course holistic veterinarian Ella Bittel put together a treasure box of tools that allow you to optimize care for your beloved animal companion even at times when commonly it would be assumed an impasse has been reached. Along the way, this class systematically explores the main reasons why companion animals are euthanized, offering a fresh perspective on how to respond to health challenges with integrative care options, which encompass conventional as well as complementary medicine therapies, and also detailing the day-to-day care, ways in which the caregiver can support their animal loved one.

Topics covered in this course:

  • Care options for common conditions in geriatric and special needs animals:
  • Loss of ability to walk, incontinence, chronic heart failure, loss of appetite and more
  • Integrative approaches to easing pain (conventional and holistic options)
  • Integrative approaches to working with emotional pain (for example restlessness, anxiety)
  • Cancer prevention
  • Holistic modalities helpful in (not just) special needs and end-of-life animal care
  • Re-evaluating common reasons for euthanasia
  • Integrating our personal experiences on death and dying
  • Animal hospice in our society

This canine nutrition course will introduce you to whole food nutrition; meaning utilizing real foods and the nutrients within to glean value and energy in what is eaten. It will build upon this by defining vitamins and minerals, looking at where these can be derived in nature as well as basic nutrient requirements for dogs. Formulations, dietary options, processing, and nutrigenomics will also be presented. Disclaimer:  This course focuses on whole food factors, learning how to read labels, creating better diets, and integrating supplements.

There are a variety of great dog food and supplement companies.  This course does not promote any dog food company or any specific type of feeding a dog. However, Dr. Frick does recommend in both her practice and in this course, the Standard Process line of supplements because of their uniquely formulated tissue extracts. Whether you chose to utilize the products of Standard Process is your choice.  She strongly believes that she would not be doing you or your dogs a service if she does not take this opportunity to enlighten you about this aspect of our and their bodies.
