I had been reading a “conversation” in one of the list serves that is subscribed to by people who are either professionals or interested in canine behavior and/or training.

The conversation was about a trainer who had tried to work with a family (husband, wife, two adolescents) with a LARGE breed dog who had bit a few times unprovoked. The trainer asked the list serve what they thought he should do.

The family had asked the trainer to take the dog to the veterinarian to be euthanized as one of their children had a disability that would make this decision not something she could understand. So the premise was the trainer was “taking” the dog, not euthanizing the dog. The details are many, but the discussion of the best solution is what I would like to talk about here. [Read more…]

How to Reach a Positive and Happy Relationship With Your Dog

Purpose: This course will serve as an introduction to C.W. Meisterfeld’s philosophy of dog training. C.W. Meisterfeld was using and writing about positive reinforcement for dog training in the early 50’s. After taking this course the student will be able to apply Meisterfeld’s basic principles of mutual trust & respect.  Rehabilitating aggressive dogs is a focus of this course.

Whether you have a new puppy, a “problem dog”, an aggressive dog, or just want to act properly around dogs, you should take this dog training course. It could save your dog’s life and, at least equally important, save you, innocent children and friends from the horrors of dog bites and from the nightmare of having to put your dog to sleep. The good news is that it will teach you how to reach a positive, mutually satisfactory, happy relationship with your dog without using negative methods in his training, such as intimidation, force, punishment, and pain. Even more amazing it will enable you to do this because you abstain from these negative methods.

C.W.’s methods are based on over 55 years of experience in the uniformly successful training of dogs of all breeds and ages. Even more important, in over 45 years of Specializing in rehabilitation of aggressive dogs, biting dogs, problem dogs, many dogs were saved from death by these methods and returned to their happy owners as safe and well-mannered pets.

Format: This course is approximately 2-3 hours in length. It is a piece of dog training history that has withstood the test of time: 60 plus years! Format is of 1.  a powerpoint with interviews and recordings from the late C.W. Meisterfeld moderated by Rhonda Camfeld, the legal recipient of his intellectual property, friend and lifelong student of “William.” Rhonda rehabilitates aggressive Bull Terriers…not a task for everyone…using the methods she learned from Dr. Meisterfeld. 2. You will also see several video demonstrations as though you were at his seminar. 3. You will also be given detailed knowledge, skills and step by step instruction in his method. American Humane Hero Dog Awards

Ok, my leap into the world of blogging.

I finally have an important push. A very special student of ours, Heddie Leger, just lost her four-legged “Hero” to cancer. Though I never met Heddie or Hero, we just have always had that connection that doesn’t seem to need real or frequent contact. It was Hero and my Rottweilers from the past that brought us together. We have had many long emails telling the stories and lessons these dogs have given us.

Hero and Heddie, among MANY things, were the demo dog for the Missouri Correctional Dog Training program called Puppies for Parole. One of Hero and Heddie’s friend, also a part of the Missouri Correctional Dog Training Program is “Captain Jack.” Captain Jack has been nominated for the “Emerging Hero Dog.” He is representing the only cancer research group. It would be such a wonderful thing for his story to win as it would be featured on the Hallmark channel. [Read more…]

I am a dog trainer in Morocco for the past three years. I just finished the Associate Dog Trainers course with E-Training for Dogs. I love it! I learned so much throughout the course. I am a pedigree German, bred and raised there, unfortunately without exposure to keeping dogs, and moved to Southern Africa in 1988. I got involved in dog obedience training in Namibia in 1993 when my first dogs, 2 staffies, ran my life. I started teaching training classes in 1995 (unfortunately the traditional way) and I even managed to pass the KUSA obedience A-Test with Shandy, one of the staffies. During this journey I started crossing over to more positive training methods and taught myself clicker training, which I now use in training all my dogs.
My interest in therapy work started in 2006, and in February 2007, I qualified with my Rottweiler Rayah as therapy dog team. In March 2009, with the help of friends and my husband Piet, we established our own therapy dog organisation, Caring Friends Therapy Dogs. I am currently working my Russian Black Terrier Aleks as therapy dog, since Rayah has mostly retired from the work. I also have 2 Golden Retrievers (Molly & Kimba), both being qualified therapy dogs, too.
In October 2010, I started my own dog training school, Happy Tails Dog Training Center, in the Vaal Triangle (South Africa), initially focusing on therapy dog training, but due to demand, extending into puppy and pet dog training classes. Although I had acquired my Advanced Behaviourist certificate with the Pretoria Technikon in 2003 and studied many books on positive training methods and canine behaviour, I felt I lacked more hands on experience and guidance. I enrolled in the ADT programme with “e-Training for Dogs”, to gain further qualifications and knowledge that would help me grow my training school into a professional establishment. Although the journey through the programme was long and tedious (only due to lack of time I could devote to my studies), it was a wonderful experience. The instructors were all exceptionally helpful and the study material of outstanding quality. I feel privileged to have studied under such reputable trainers and behaviourists, and have gained invaluable knowledge and experience throughout the modules. I now feel ready and equipped to grow my training school to new heights and my goal is to become the “Brand Name in Dog Training” in our area. Thank you, Cheryl, for your guidance throughout and for offering such a great programme. I look forward to attending more courses with the International College for Canine Studies, for further enrichment.

Purpose: To learn when, how and why to apply equine massage in a safe and positive environment.

Course Information: Students will learn all the relevant Swedish massage therapy strokes; history and theory of massage; definition and purpose of massage for equines; creating a positive environment for massage; physiological effects of massage for equines; psychological effects of massage for equines; contraindications to massage for equines; assessment and treatment protocols for equines; an introduction to hydrotherapy for equines; equine biomechanics and kinesiology; case studies of common equine soft tissue issues. The massage course will also develop specialized massage skills to deal with a wide variety of health issues. Students will be introduced to the following specialized massage skills – acupressure, sports massage, lymphatic drainage massage, and the use of colour therapy. The equine massage course also introduces students to effective business development and sustainability skills and provides a wide variety of information on small business resources available through local, regional and national governments and financial institutions. The course also helps students perform 40 case studies. Students will be provided with a comprehensive manual and two instructional videos. The videos provide details on the assessment procedures – visual, palpation and gaiting including the impact different surfaces will have on the gait, the creation of a positive and safe working environment, all the massage strokes including the specialized massage protocols, a complete therapeutic massage session and a stretch routine. Each class will also contain video demonstrations.

What you can expect to learn in the equine massage online course:

  • Contraindications of massage.
  • Creating a safe and positive massage environment.
  • Assessment protocols – including taking a case history, gaiting to assess soundness, palpation.
  • All Swedish massage strokes – including effleurage, raking, petrissage, kneading, tapotement, cupping and hacking.
  • Hydrotherapy.
  • Stretch routines – both active and passive protocols.
  • Creation of homecare plans.
  • Sports massage.
  • Lymphatic drainage massage.
  • Acupressure techniques.

  • The relationship between conformation, injury and rehabilitation.
