How Understanding Basic Dog Ethology Can Benefit Trainers

Dog EthologyUnderstanding Basic Dog Ethology for Dog Trainers

Speaker: Ken McCort

Recorded: November 5, 2013
Available recorded only.

You have heard much of dog ethology. But how does understanding it benefit dog trainers? This presentation can benefit people who train dogs, and especially those who work with behavior concerns,  by looking into and understanding dog behavior under “natural” conditions.  If humans were not taking care of the dog, how does it survive?  What role did dogs play with humans before that became companions or “pets” and how does that affect the dog population today?  This is an introductory look at the ethology, starting with when ethology came into the field of science and then looking at what it has done to enhance our understanding of why dogs do what they do.

Some of what to expect in this webinar:

  • We will look at the selective breeding for specific behaviors and groups of behaviors in dogs from ethnologically based needs.
  • We will examine what happens when these “bred for” behaviors are directed at unwanted stimuli.
  • We will discuss what happens when dogs don’t have an outlet for these bred for behaviors.
  • We will analyze some specific cases were trainers and dog handlers misunderstood the motivations of some dogs’ behaviors and made the situation worse.
