Puppy Temperament Assessment-Assessing for Function or Friend

Description: Students will gain an understanding of temperament testing and assessments such as: what is assessed; who assesses; does assessment work; what tests are available; dog personality assessments for Assistance Dogs; what personality traits make a good Assistance Dog; example of an assessment; and how to test puppies for canine working careers and for pet homes.

Excerpt-

Form for a sample assessment-

•ISOLATION TEST – Place puppy and hide, keep silent and observe for 1 to 2 minutes
•TU, EU (means Tail up and Ears Up)
•Wide ranging investigation of environment, active, curious, interacts with environment
•D1 is a short hand score meaning puppy is the Director-type, highly confident and self-possessed
•TU, EU
•Moderate area investigation, curious and attentive, tends to hesitate and then grows in confidence
•D2 means that the puppy develops in confidence as the test progresses, may follow scent of Tester
•TD, EU and down intermittently
•Moderate area investigation, tends to return to base position, watchful, tail wagging,
•DS3
•TD, EB (Tail down, Ears Back) may tuck tail and then lift tail moderately
•Tends to sit in base position, restricted area investigation – immediate area
•S4 (means Subordinate or inclined to follow the others in the litter or wait, cautious, inhibited
•TD, EB L (tail held low and wagging very slightly or slowly)
•Vocalises, tends to lie down or stay in base position, reluctant to move, timid,t
•SS5
•TD, EB – tail tucked, back arched, body held low
•Freezes or runs from the area, trembles, vocalises, fearful, reactive,
