Evolution of Dogs
Speaker: Charlie Berger, DVM
Description: Dr Berger discusses the evolution of dogs, their relationship to wolves, and the association of dogs with humans from pre-historic times to the present. Participants will have increased knowledge of the origin of all canids, how they began their association with humans, and how humans have influenced the evolution of dogs in general, and dog breeds specifically, in recent times. Learn the different physiology and behavioral changes that result from selecting for certain characteristics from simple “tameness” to size, coat, color, and function (breed or group).
Excerpt:
Morphological, Physiological and Behavioral Changes resulting from selecting for tameness
- Dwarfed and giant animals
- Coat color changes: piebald
- Wavy and curly, long and short coats
- Tail changes: curled and short (reduction in vertebrae)
- Floppy ears (not found in any wild animal except elephants)
- Loss of season rhythms of reproduction: wild fox once/year; domestic fox = twice/year and sexually mature one month earlier, with longer breeding season
- Shorter legs
- Underbites and overbites in dentition
- Smaller brains
- Broader skulls relative to length
- Higher serotonin levels (lack of aggression, flight response, less stressed)
- Whining and barking
