Two Introductory Herding Dog Training Courses now combined:
Herding Dogs I-Building the Foundation
Herding Dogs II-Basic Skill Building
Purpose:
Herding I-To teach you the building blocks of raising your herding puppy or dog to be your willing partner before you introduce them to stock; and
Herding II-to solidly establish the basic herding dog training skills, calm stock handling and to develop a working partnership between you and your dog.
Course Infomation:
Herding I-This herding dog training course will focus on providing you and your dog with the necessary tools for becoming working partners. Raising your pup or dog to develop a strong and mutually respectful relationship with you will become the foundation for all your future training. This course teaches you to teach your dog basic life skills, which are necessary before you actually start your dog on stock. Herding breed dogs with their handlers who are interested in a positive method for learning and teaching their dogs shepherding skills, for fun, for competition or for farm chores will find this course fits their needs. You will learn and practice skills designed to shape your dog’s natural herding abilities while you also learn how to read stock.ny age may participate in this course. (This series of herding courses is not for ‘herd-tending’ breeds that guard and protect livestock.)
Herding II– This course will teach you how to begin working together with your dog to handle livestock. Your dog’s natural instincts for herding will be developed, while teaching your dog to look to you for guidance. You will learn the basic herding skills and how to teach them to your dog. You will be handling your dog on a long line, using clear communication, body language and a clicker or voice to affirm your dog’s successful attempts of the lesson at hand.

Herding I –
- The role of genetics in training a herding dog
- Establishing a working partnership with your dog
- How to effectively communicate with your dog in a positive way
- A brief, yet solid overview of the foundation life skills required for a shepherd’s partner and how to teach them
- What you will need next to start your dog on sheep or ducks
Herding II-
- Understand the interaction of dog and sheep, and their response to one another.
- Learn the basic herding skills and verbal cues: what they mean and how to use them. (That’ll do, Stop, Stay, Flanks – Come Bye and Away to Me, Steady, Lift)
- Teach your dog to look to you for leadership thru exercises off stock.
- Learn how to teach your dog flanking basics off stock.
- Understand and practice the principles of good handling.
- Introduce your dog to stock and teach the basic skills using a long line.
- Learn how to develop mindful, keen and workman-like behavior in your dog.
- Nurture a strong partnership between you and your dog.
