Stabled Horse Activities
Speaker: Barbara Handelman M.Ed., CDBC
Description: This presentation is relevant to all horses who spend significant periods of time confined in a stall. This includes horses who are stabled all the time unless being worked; horses who come in from their pastures for the night; and horses who are confined because of sickness or injury. In this presentation, illustrated with still photos and video of horses, Handelman will offer examples of stressed horses, horses in pain, and horses exhibiting stereotypic and other compulsive behaviors. It is essential that owners, horse trainers, and horse behavior consultants be able to recognize both subtle and overt signs of stress, and be able to differentiate signs of stress from physical pain and aggressive arousal. Handelman will present a range of stabled horse activities and horse training challenges that can occupy horses and their trainers during a period of confinement. She will also introduce a variety of food-dispensing horse toys that provide mental stimulation and simulate foraging for food. Some see rehabilitative confinement as a prison sentence for the animal. Stall or crate rest creates the risk of mental and physical stress-related negative consequences for the animals. Opportunities can balance those risks. Confinement in a quiet, space-restricted environment is a setting in which exhilarating new Stabled Horse Activities and learning can occur.
Clicker training for horses and any animal creates an intimate conversation between animal and human. The emerging dialogue becomes the foundation for enhanced bonding and understanding between the two species.
While this presentation is based on Handelman’s current work with horses restricted to stall rest, parallels exist in the confinement and rehabilitation of all animal species.
