Purpose: To prepare students to:
- Objectively consider the health and medical status of a dog presenting with behavior problems.
- Understand how a dog’s development impacts their behavior.
- Prevent problem behaviors in dogs through socialization and training.
- Have a working knowledge of the available products and medication
- Study for and take Section IV of the CBCC-KA examination.

Course Info:
This course, Health, Development, and Life Stages of Dogs – Impact on Behavior and Training is didactic in nature. It focuses on understanding the intricate balance between medical and behavioral etiologies for problem behavior and is designed to help dog owners, trainers and veterinarians determine when there is a need for medical intervention. There will also be an emphasis placed on developmental stages and behavior problem prevention. Case examples and videos will be used to give the student a better understanding of the concepts covered.
9 Lessons with 8 quizzes and a Final Exam to test your knowledge of the material and become better prepared to pass the CBCC-KA exam with the CCPDT.

- Determine physical signs and behaviors that suggest a dog should be seen by a veterinarian

- When should you refer to the vet to discuss concerns related to physical and behavioral development
- Describe the development, maintenance, and deterioration of the canine sensory, motor, and social systems
- Advantages and disadvantages to puppy, juvenile, adolescent, and adult canine temperament and behavior testing
- Compare and contrast learning during the canine life stages
- Determine the sensitive periods and their impact canine development
- Working knowledge of the various products and medications available to veterinarians and their use in behavior medicine
- Understand why puppies provided with poor socialization or deprived of environmental exposure often develop lifelong deficits and dysfunctional behaviors
- See how exercise and mental stimulation impact the normal and abnormal behavioral developmental of the canine
- Understand the importance of proper weaning and the factors that should be considered when determining the optimal time to separate a puppy from his/her dam and littermates
- Recognize appropriate and inappropriate play and the potential consequences of appropriate and inappropriate play for pre-adult canines
- Appreciate the role of training in behavior problem prevention
- Determine the specific training that can be done to decrease the likelihood of development of serious canine behavioral problems and injury to people and canine
- Explain how consistent training contributes to problem prevention

Length of time to access this course: The study for this exam is recommended to be 6 months to a year. Therefore, access to this course (Credit or Audit) will be allowed for 12 months. Extensions are available ON REQUEST for two additional testing periods after the 12 months at no extra cost. After that, there will be a fee to extend. AUDIT VERSION: 12 months-NO extensions without additional payment will be allowed.
