Introduction to Conditioning the Performance Dog

November 14, 2011 By Cheryl Aguiar |

To achieve the greater goal of a long career and healthy aging – not just a good run.

Course Information:

  • WHO? Your dog! Does he have “athletic” structure which will support him during your chosen event or be damaged by the multiple stresses of training and competition? What degree of angulation does he have; is it similar front to hind and what is the big “trade-off” created by angulation extremes, its impact on muscle development and optimal movement. What can we learn watching dog’s gait?
  • WHAT are the 5 important attributes for performance dogs? How important is Proprioception for a performance dog, and how can we improve this key sense.
  • WHERE will the dog need these structural traits for optimal performance? How can we predict injury potential when certain aspects are weak?
  • WHEN should we plan to condition each aspect during training, competition & off seasons? Why is it important to create pre-, competition and –post season routines?
  • WHY will conditioning prevent / minimize sport related injuries? Have you ever considered the connection between metabolism, physical development and injury potential? What is “tapering” and how will this technique extend your dog’s career and keep him ‘sharp’
  • HOW will optimal condition enhance the dog’s ability to recover from a crisis – and what is the impact that ‘drives’ will have on injury and rehabilitation outcomes?

This presentation will introduce you to the various topics of discussion in the Conditioning a Performance Dog program and leave you with the skills to raise each dog better than the last – for the dog’s sake!

Instructor: Racine Hyatt, CCFt, CCM
