Classical Conditioning in Dog Training-Thinking like a Dog Trainer Part 2

November 13, 2013 By Cheryl Aguiar |

classical conditioning in dog trainingClassical Conditioning in Dog Training

Speaker:  Sue Alexander CPT-KSA, CBCC-KA, CDBC

When training a dog, the first tools we think of are in the realm of operant conditioning; what the dog does produces an outcome.  There is a whole other realm of learning that dog trainers need to know about; the learning that occurs classically!  Classical conditioning is the effect that results when two stimuli are paired together.  Using classical conditioning in dog training is a powerful type of learning that can help you change behaviours in profound ways, getting at the underpinning of motivation for canine behaviour.  When you think like a dog trainer, you think both about what the learner has under his control, but also what he learns when he is not controlling aspects of his environment by understanding the use of classical conditioning in dog training. Canine Vaccine Issues: Should I Vaccinate My Dog?

November 7, 2013 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Vaccination1Canine Vaccine Issues

Speaker: Dr. W. Jean Dodd, DVM

Modern vaccine technology has permitted us to protect companion animals effectively against serious infectious diseases. However, controversy surrounding canine vaccine issues exist. The challenge to produce effective and safe vaccines for the prevalent infectious diseases of animals has become increasingly difficult. In veterinary medicine, evidence implicating vaccines in triggering immune-mediated and other chronic disorders (vaccinosis) is compelling.  While some of these problems have been traced to contaminated or poorly attenuated batches of vaccine that revert to virulence, others apparently reflect the host’s genetic predisposition to react adversely upon receiving the single (monovalent) or multiple antigen “combo” (polyvalent) products given routinely to animals.  Animals of certain susceptible breeds or families appear to be at increased risk for severe and lingering adverse reactions to vaccines.

What will be discussed:

  • Scientific based national guidelines and policy about companion animal vaccines.
  • Why is a large cohort of veterinarians reluctant to embrace the national guidelines?
  • Do vaccine industry representatives fully inform veterinarians about the duration of immunity and true regional and local needs for some types of vaccines ?
  • Risks of, as well as, benefits of today’s vaccines

How Understanding Basic Dog Ethology Can Benefit Trainers

October 22, 2013 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Dog EthologyUnderstanding Basic Dog Ethology for Dog Trainers

Speaker: Ken McCort

Recorded: November 5, 2013
Available recorded only.

You have heard much of dog ethology. But how does understanding it benefit dog trainers? This presentation can benefit people who train dogs, and especially those who work with behavior concerns,  by looking into and understanding dog behavior under “natural” conditions.  If humans were not taking care of the dog, how does it survive?  What role did dogs play with humans before that became companions or “pets” and how does that affect the dog population today?  This is an introductory look at the ethology, starting with when ethology came into the field of science and then looking at what it has done to enhance our understanding of why dogs do what they do.

Some of what to expect in this webinar:

  • We will look at the selective breeding for specific behaviors and groups of behaviors in dogs from ethnologically based needs.
  • We will examine what happens when these “bred for” behaviors are directed at unwanted stimuli.
  • We will discuss what happens when dogs don’t have an outlet for these bred for behaviors.
  • We will analyze some specific cases were trainers and dog handlers misunderstood the motivations of some dogs’ behaviors and made the situation worse.

Cost: $25.00

Pressure Wraps and Achieving Behavioral Calm in Anxious Dogs

October 20, 2013 By Cheryl Aguiar |

dogbehindcouchPressure Wraps For Dogs

How do pressure wraps work? Is there any science behind how they work or are they just another gimmick? This talk will trace the development of pressure wraps for dogs that are used to ease canine anxiety and will include a discussion of how they work to induce behavioral calm, situations that might be helped with a pressure wrap and the differences between the various types of pressure wraps. Participants will learn how to properly apply pressure wraps and what to expect following application. They will hear about the speaker’s personal experiences with pressure wraps used with different dogs in different situations and learn about recent research conducted at Tufts University to evaluate the effectiveness of The Anxiety Wrap.

Dog Cognition: A Report from Kyoto

August 8, 2013 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Dog CognitionDog Cognition – Live From Kyoto, Japan

Speaker: Dr. Kazuo Fujita

In this talk, Dr. Fujita presents studies on various cognitive functions in dogs conducted as an activity of CAMP-WAN, Companion Animal Mind Project – Wide Area Network, Kyoto University (see https://sites.google.com/site/kyotocampwan2/home — Japanese only website). Topics include: episodic use of incidentally formed memory, multimodal recognition of owners and genders, understanding of social characteristics of humans, inference of physical environment from social information, and behavioral characteristics related to genetic variations. We find wonderful intelligence and behavioral flexibility of dogs in many of the tests but at the same time limitations of their cognitive abilities.
