Advanced Clicker Training for Dogs: Shaping and Targeting

September 9, 2014 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Advanced Clicker Training for DogsAdvanced Clicker

The clicker is an extremely valuable tool as part of the process of creating or changing behavior. Many who use a clicker combine it with lure/reward or traditional training methods, which can slow the learning process. The use of Shaping and Targeting allows the dog to not only become a cooperative partner in training, but when used correctly speeds the learning process and creates stronger behavior. This webinar on advanced clicker training for dogs is geared toward those looking to take their clicker training to the next level and remove lures or compulsion from the process. There will be many videos and examples of advanced clicker training for dogs that will include performance sports, problem behavior, and every day manners and tricks. Take the next step in your training and join Julie in this fun and informative webinar.

Speaker: Julie Flanery, BS, RFE-CI
Julie is the owner of Wonder Dogs, in Philomath, OR. Julie has been working professionally with dogs and their owners since 1995, focusing on the needs of the dog and forming a stronger relationship through clear communication and positive reinforcement training methods.  In 2001 she was named “Trainer of the Year” by the World Canine Freestyle Organization and has been a competition freestyle judge since 2003.
Available as a recording.

Healthy Mind, Healthy Dog

ScaredDogCanine Anxiety and Dog Health

Common companion animal behavior problems seen in behavior clinics often stem from anxiety. In this presentation Niwako Ogata, a board certified veterinary behaviorist and assistant professor of Companion Animal Behavior at Purdue University, will focus on the following questions: Where does anxiety come from? How can we reduce anxiety and nervousness in dogs? Dr. Ogata describes the different kinds of emotions in dogs and their components.  She discusses fear and anxiety, the different kinds of fear stimuli, anxiety disorders, and what affects the intensity of an emotional response. She demonstrates how emotions consist of patterns of physiological changes and accompanying behaviors; that observing body languages is important but behavior may reflect unspecific autonomic signs such as pain; that fear and anxiety are normal responses and repertoire in dogs if the responses are contextual and provide functional outcome to dogs, and finally, that nature and nurture affect fear and anxiety. This lecture demonstrates that knowledge of canine body language and fear and/or anxiety responses are essential for the veterinary professional and other canine professionals. The relationship between the dog’s mind, health, and behavior must be taken into account.

A question and answer session follows the webinar, moderated by Monique Udell, PhD.

Speaker: Niwako Ogata, Ph.D., DACVB

This presentation will focus on:

  • Where does anxiety come from?
  • How can we reduce anxiety and nervousness in dogs?
  • How can we help keep our dogs’ minds healthy?

Treating Canine Behavior Problems with Medication

February 8, 2014 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Feature_FriedmanTreating Canine Behavior Problems with Medication:  The what, when, why and how

This lecture on treating canine behavior problems with medication will give an overview of how to choose which cases need or would benefit from pharmacological intervention.  The session will also cover common medications, their uses, combinations, and common side effects.

Speaker:  Lore I. Haug, DVM, MS, DACVB, CPDT, CABC

Description: Psychoactive drug use in animals for behavior problems is often poorly understood by the public.  There are a variety of misconceptions about the effects the medications will achieve. Additionally, owners and other individuals may feel that medications will change their pet’s personality or make the animal appear sluggish and “stoned.”   There is also the misconception that conventional drug therapy is riskier than using “natural” products such as herbs and supplements.

This lecture will discuss three categories of cases:  1) those were medication is not indicated, 2) those where medication may clearly be beneficial but not crucial, and 3) those where medication should be an integral part of the therapy.  Case examples will be used to aid in illustrating some of the behavioral and physiologic symptoms used for categorizing patients.

Attendees will learn:

  • “Levels” of cases and their indication, or lack of, for addition of psychotropic medication — this will include patient factors as well as owner factors
  • common general indications for use of medications
  • common side effects or contraindications for classes of medications
  • Monitoring criteria and procedures for switching or weaning off medications
  • Tips for counseling clients on the advantages and disadvantages of medications

Due to the time limitation of the lecture, this session will not cover characteristics of individual medications in any detail.

Recorded Live and now available as a recording OnDemand.

Domestic Dogs: The New Darlings of Animal Cognition

January 9, 2014 By Cheryl Aguiar |

How Smart Are Dogs? How smart are dogs?

Speaker: Krista Macpherson, MS

Description: Over the past 10 years, psychological research has taken a renewed and increasing interest in the domestic dog.  While this species was once considered “artificial” due to domestication, many researchers now argue that their unique relationship with humans is precisely what makes dogs such an interesting topic of study.  Many dog owners assume that dogs are exceptionally intelligent animals…but how much do we really know about their cognitive ability at this point?  How smart are dogs?  What are the implications of our close social relationship with dogs for psychological research?

This lecture will present findings from 3 areas of study that may contradict typical beliefs about canine cognition.  In the first set of experiments, we staged false emergencies to test whether or not a dog would attempt to save an owner who appeared to be experiencing an emergency situation.  In two other sets of experiments, we tested numerical discrimination, or “counting” in dogs, as well as spatial memory.  The performance of dogs in these experiments proved to be very different from has been observed previously in other species.  The findings from these three very different areas of research will be integrated into a general discussion of the study of cognition in domestic dogs.

Chomp: Predatory Behavior in Wolves and Dogs

December 20, 2013 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Predatory behavior in dogsPredatory Behavior in Dogs and Wolves

Speaker: Monty Sloan

Description: In addressing how dogs are similar and how they are different from the wolf in terms of development, ecology, and behavior, one needs to look at the basic functions and development of predation in the wolf.  The obligate progression of predatory behaviors seen in wolves exist to varying degrees, but have been modified, in some cases nearly to the point of non-existence, in dogs. With a focus on wolf predatory behaviour, emphasizing field studies in Yellowstone and Isle Royale, this program will address ontological development,  effects of the environment and learning, as well as individual variations of behavior in the wolf.  Comparisons will be drawn to dogs, and some of the differences seen in various dog breeds.
