What does the dog say?

January 3, 2021 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Why do dogs bark? Why do dogs bark?

What are they trying to communicate when they do bark?

We first learned that dogs bark when we were in preschool, and most of us have probably been hearing dogs bark every day since. But despite its constant presence in our lives the function of this vocalization is still highly contested. In this talk I will take a comparative look at the “why do dogs bark”….the dog bark with vocalizations in other species. Based on this and the bioacoustics of the bark itself, I will present a hypothesis on the function of the bark as the result of conflicting inner states. I will also present some new data that tests this hypothesis against the idea that barks have evolved in dogs as interspecific communication with humans.

What Does the Nose Know?

January 2, 2021 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Sniffing dog chceking luggageCanine Nose Studies

We all know dogs have an incredible sense of smell, but that’s just the beginning. The dog olfactory system has received considerable scrutiny in recent years, both the extent of dogs’ detection skills as well as the role of olfaction in everyday interactions. Scent-based sports and games are on the rise, and behavior-modification protocols now incorporate smell-based recommendations.

Join Julie Hecht, MSc, for a tour of recent research into canine nose studies – dog olfaction, including its role in detection work and everyday intra- and inter-specific interactions. New brain and behavior research help complete the picture of the dog’s olfactory system. There is much more to a dog’s wet nose than meets the eye.

The Genetic Basis of a Hyper-Social Canid

June 7, 2018 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Why is the “dog” such a social creature?

What is the genetic basis of a hyper-social canid?

Although considerable progress has been made in understanding the genetic basis of physical traits, such as body size and coat color in dogs and wolves, the genetic basis of their behavioral differences has been poorly understood. New research in combining behavioral and genetic data is critical to understanding the origins of behavioral traits associated with domestication. In this talk Dr. Bridgett vonHoldt will discuss research exploring the relationship between canine social behavior and genetics.  Increased social behavior has now been linked with alterations to a 5-Mb genomic region on chromosome 6 associated with Williams-Beuren syndrome in humans; a disorder characterized by hyper-social behavior. Additionally, insertions in two additional genes (GTF2I and GTF2IRD1) implicated in the hypersocial behavior of individuals with WBS also appear to contribute to extreme sociability in dogs. So why does the genetic basis of a hyper-social canid matter to researchers? The sharing of mutations in the same genes between dogs and human WBS patients suggests that there are commonalities in the genetic structure of hypersociability, facilitating the divergence of dogs from wolves and dogs coexistence with humans. A discussion on how this new knowledge informs our understanding of canine social behavior will follow.

Available as a recording.

Speaker: Dr. Bridgett vonHoldt

This talk covers:

  • A brief overview of canine behavioral genetics
  • Recent findings from study linking dog social behavior with genetic alterations
  • Discussion of commonalities between Williams-Beuren syndrome in humans and genetic changes associated with hyper-social behavior in dogs.
  • What these genetic changes might tell us about dog domestication and dog’s success in human environments.
  • Defining and measuring hypersocial
  • Genetic association methods
  • Predicting molecular consequences
  • Population assessment of variants

Cost: $25.00 USD

Dogs Have Issues Too: Helping Dogs Cope With Stress

August 1, 2015 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Helping Dogs Cope With StressThis webinar presentation will be a very brief overview/introduction to helping dogs cope with stress. Jane Miller will provide a number of stress reduction/relaxation techniques along with monitoring methods.  This is a very basic introduction to stress reduction/relaxation techniques covering the definition of stress, eustress and distress. Due to time constraints we will not be focusing on the brain’s role.

The stress reduction techniques that will be discussed include breathing, acupressure points, TTouch, canine massotherapy, reiki, meditation,  and biofeedback etc.  The monitoring methods of stress will be addressed  include, stress signs/body language,  cortisol levels from saliva, urine and hair, heart rate  and variable heart rates, breathing rates, pulse, vagal tone, biofeedback, and MRI’s, which are costly and invasive and may cause stress  levels to increase by the testing itself.

  • Understand what is meant by good stress eustress vs. bad stress distress
  • Learn various stress reduction techniques to add to your toolbox since different methods work for different dogs…one size does not fit all
  • An introduction  to breathing techniques, acupressure points, TTouch, canine massotherapy,
  • Learn how to apply this knowledge and monitoring techniques
  • Learn methods of monitoring heart rate, pulse, breathing rate,  cortisol levels, biofeedback MRIs  and the pros and cons of these techniques.
  • Resources: An extensive list of videos, links,  references, articles, websites, diagrams,  etc. will be provided.

A question and answer session will follow this dogs and animal welfare webinar that will be moderated by Dr. Cheryl Aguiar

Available as a recording.

Why is Animal Welfare Important to Dogs?

July 10, 2015 By Cheryl Aguiar |

dogs and animal welfareDogs and animal welfare

Most of us recognize that “animal welfare” is important, but what does “welfare” mean to dogs in 2015? Mia Cobb covers the what, why and how of animal welfare science as it applies to modern dogs. Drawing on practical examples from companion, shelter, working dog and veterinary clinic contexts, participants will be updated with the latest science of dogs and animal welfare and learn how to apply this knowledge to improve the lives of the dogs around us.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand what is meant by the term “animal welfare”, it’s history and development as a field of scientific research.
  • Understand why animal welfare is important to modern companion, working and shelter dogs.
  • Learn what influences canine welfare, including environmental, social and human factors.
  • Be updated on the latest research of welfare in dogs, including how it is measured.
  • Know how to apply this knowledge in real world situations (e.g. home, shelter, boarding/working dog kennel, vet clinic) to improve the welfare of dogs.

A question and answer session will follow this dogs and animal welfare webinar that will be moderated by Dr. Monique Udell.
