Basic Puppy Training Skills and Theory Using Positive Methods

Purpose:  This class will teach you the fundamentals of training a puppy to be well-mannered and socialized, resulting in a well rounded adult dog using positive reinforcement training methods. The techniques to be applied are based on developing and strengthening a trusting relationship between the human and the dog using positive reinforcement.

Course Information: This positive puppy training class is designed for the beginning dog trainer to work with puppies up to the age of six months and teach the owner how to teach their puppy through positive reinforcement. Students will learn the importance of early socialization and how best to properly introduce a puppy to new situations and environments. We will address common puppy issues such as house-training, nipping, jumping, and chewing; as well as learn fundamentals such as sit, down, stand, short stays, leave it, come when called, and the basics of loose leash walking. Students will learn how to approach training and discipline in a positive manner during the most crucial social growth stage in a puppy’s development. This is a hands-on course that will require students to work with a puppy from 8 weeks to 6 months old. Students will learn how to apply learning theory and positive reinforcement methods to give a puppy the best start possible in life and create a strong and lasting bond between human and dog. You will be required to work with a dog and provide video progress throughout the course.

Prerequisites: None

What you can expect to learn from this course:

  • Learning Theory
  • What is “positive reinforcement” and how to apply it to puppies.
  • Social development of puppies
  • Equipment needed for training
  • Step-by-step instruction for basic puppy training (sit, down, stand, short stays, leave it, come when called, loose leash walking)
  • Common puppy issues such as house-training, nipping, jumping, and chewing
  • Common puppy care such as feeding, teeth brushing, etc.
  • Video homework is required for CEUs
