Fur Babies, From Wolf to Child

April 13, 2014 By Cheryl Aguiar |

dogs as child substitutesDogs as child substitutes. What are the negatives of “fur babies?”

What happens when we forget to love the dog because we are too busy loving the “person?”

An exploration of humans parenting animals and what that means to today’s canine companions. Is it “good” for them, or harmful?

Recent data suggests that many modern humans are applying natural parenting strategies to the animals in their homes, especially dogs. This webinar seeks to explain this phenomenon through the evolutionary and psychological forces on both species. Scientific literature, along with anecdotes about people and their “fur kids,” will be presented. There will also be a discussion about the positive and negative effects of this trend on the physical and mental well-being of the dogs, with information on how pet professionals can help owners meet the needs of their canine “children.” is it healthy for the humans and the dogs to think of dogs as child substitutes will be covered.

Speaker:  Shelly Volsche, CPDT-KA, DipCFN

Attendees can expect to learn:

  • The most commonly discussed models of dog domestication
  • A cross-cultural look at humans “parenting” animals
  • The basics of attachment from an evolutionary perspective
  • How canine “parenting” may fulfill the needs of the client and dog
  • How to use that attachment to improve the human-canine bond

The Use of Intravenous Nutrition in Pets-IV Nutrition for Dogs

January 20, 2014 By Cheryl Aguiar |

IV nutrition in dogsIV Nutrition for Dogs

The Use of Intravenous Nutrition in Pets

Due to poor nutritional practices in many pets they often no longer are able to absorb the nutrients they ingest. Many chronic illnesses may be exacerbated by a lack of nutrition. There is either poor gut function or excessive toxic load or both, causing an overload of the system.

Intravenous (IV) administration can offset the need for massive quantities of oral supplements thus treating the disease at a root level.  Nutrition, that when abundant, will not allow disease to flourish appears to assist healing a litany of disease labels.  Long used human IV therapies have been adapted by the author for use in our canine companions.  Even western medicine can recognize the place for IV nutritional therapies, for instance the use of B12 injections in small intestinal disease.

Case studies, background and when to use different protocols will be discussed.  IV therapies have been used for behavioral issues and wellness programs to neoplasic protocols.  All-in-all this author believes if you give the pet’s body what it needs (i.e. oxygen) it will heal itself.

“Puppy’s First Twenty Weeks” – Protocol to Socializing Puppies

December 19, 2013 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Socializing PuppiesSocializing Puppies

Speaker: Casey Newton, BS, CPDT-KA

A puppy’s most critical time to learn is in the first twenty weeks of life. Therefore, we     have only a small window of time to provide our pups with essential early socialization. Socialization, in its complete definition, is much more than introducing puppies to other dogs. It is gaining exposure to the world and learning to adhere to boundaries within a human culture’s norms. Wonder Puppy’s “Puppy’s First Twenty Weeks” Protocol to socializing puppies includes all of the ingredients needed to start a puppy on the path to mental, physical, and emotional wellness. It helps build confidence, encourages impulse control, and nurtures the parent-puppy relationship.

Attendees will learn:

  • Looking at the whole puppy to address socialization
  • How to prevent what some call “dominant” puppy behavior
  • How to set boundaries for puppies without having to resort to punishment
  • 10 essential exposure and basic skill exercises for complete socialization
  • How to prevent separation anxiety in puppies
  • How to modify puppy social interactions and play behavior
  • What goes into running a “balanced playgroup”
  • Support material for puppy parents

Recorded live now available as a recording.

32 days unlimited access.
