ScaredDogCanine Anxiety and Dog Health

Common companion animal behavior problems seen in behavior clinics often stem from anxiety. In this presentation Niwako Ogata, a board certified veterinary behaviorist and assistant professor of Companion Animal Behavior at Purdue University, will focus on the following questions: Where does anxiety come from? How can we reduce anxiety and nervousness in dogs? Dr. Ogata describes the different kinds of emotions in dogs and their components.  She discusses fear and anxiety, the different kinds of fear stimuli, anxiety disorders, and what affects the intensity of an emotional response. She demonstrates how emotions consist of patterns of physiological changes and accompanying behaviors; that observing body languages is important but behavior may reflect unspecific autonomic signs such as pain; that fear and anxiety are normal responses and repertoire in dogs if the responses are contextual and provide functional outcome to dogs, and finally, that nature and nurture affect fear and anxiety. This lecture demonstrates that knowledge of canine body language and fear and/or anxiety responses are essential for the veterinary professional and other canine professionals. The relationship between the dog’s mind, health, and behavior must be taken into account.

A question and answer session follows the webinar, moderated by Monique Udell, PhD.
