Basic Dog Training Skills and Theory Using Positive Methods

March 23, 2011 By Cheryl Aguiar |

positive dog training onlinePurpose: This positive dog training course will teach you the fundamentals of training a dog the basics all dogs should know. The techniques to be applied are based on developing and strengthening a trusting relationship between the human and the dog using positive reinforcement.

Course Information: This class is designed for the beginning dog trainer who wants to learn how to teach a dog the basic skills and behaviors all dogs should know. It is best used with any dog over the age of six months who has never taken a training class before or needs a refresher on basic manners. The trainer will learn how to precisely signal a dog’s correct response with a small hand-held “clicker” and reward the behavior so that it will more likely happen again. Obedience exercises such as sit, stand, down, and stay are introduced, as are loose-leash walking, polite greetings, “leave-it”, attention and the really reliable recall – skills crucial to the pet dog living in our society. The trainer will gain a better understanding of what dogs need and can be expected to achieve dogs in the household. Problem behaviors are also covered such as jumping, digging, barking, housebreaking, etc.

NOTE: You will also have video homework required to be sent for feedback from the Instructor.

Prerequisites: None

Here is a video from a past student and her dog Elsa. This is Anna and Elsa’s “homework assignment.”
