Measuring Behavior and Temperament in Dogs: New Methods and Applications

October 24, 2025 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Speaker: Dr. James Serpell

Description:  Studies suggest that behavior problems are one of the most important reasons why people abuse, abandon, disown or euthanize companion dogs. Improved knowledge of the distribution and causes of behavior problems in the pet dog population could therefore contribute greatly to the welfare of dogs worldwide. Unfortunately, because most dogs live inside people’s homes, they are difficult and sometimes impossible to observe for the extended periods of time needed to properly evaluate their behavior or temperament. It is therefore necessary to develop different kinds of measurement techniques for this purpose. The Canine Behavioral Assessment & Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ; https://www.cbarq.org) is one such technique that relies on measurement by proxy. Instead of observing and measuring the animal’s behavior directly, the C-BARQ collects indirect behavioral information provided by the dog’s owner, guardian or handler. This presentation will outline how and why the C-BARQ was originally developed and validated, and will describe some of the intriguing ways it is currently being used to improve our understanding of canine behavior and behavior problems.

Five Unique and Awesome Tricks!

October 10, 2025 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Five Unique and Awesome Dog TricksFive Unique and Awesome Tricks!

Instructor:  Pamela Leland KPA CTP, CPDT-KSA

Course Description:  Teach your dog Five Unique and Awesome Tricks! This course will equip students with the skills needed to train tricks that range from moderate to challenging difficulty.  These Five Unique and Awesome Tricks can be found in many trick dog courses, Freestyle routines, and Rally-Free competitions.  Many components of these tricks can serve as foundation behaviors for other canine sports and Service Dog training.  Tricks #4 and #5 are more advanced and will take more time to train.  Your dog should be at a level of training to support these: they should be clicker savvy (marker savvy), have good focus, and a willingness to learn. For the For Credit option, you will need to send in videos of you and your dog demonstrating each of the five tricks for feedback and assistance from the Instructor.

The five tricks are:

1.) Forward and Walkback Weaves

2.) Four Circle Moves Around the Handler

3.) Figure of 8 (without the handler)

4.) Back Around the Handler (challenging)

5.) Turn Back Thru (most challenging)

Goal:  After the successful completion of this course, students should be able to apply these training skills to other interesting and challenging behaviors.

Course length:  5 Lessons  (Approximately one hour each)

Prerequisites:

  • Students should have a basic understanding of operant conditioning, shaping, luring, and reinforcement strategies.
  • Students should understand how to use a clicker or verbal marker.
  • The dog should understand and trust that a reinforcer follows the click/verbal marker.

Equipment needed:

  • Target Stick or something similar like a long-handled spatula.
  • Training gates (or an X-pen) that is long enough to be set up in a circle around the handler.
  • Two cones or something similar (small upside down waste baskets would work.)
  • A training platform (or something similar) that is long enough for a standing dog.
  • For the For Credit/CEU option, students will need to send videos of you and your dog performing each trick to your Instructor.

Textbook:

“Five Unique and Awesome Tricks” by Pamela Leland.  Available on Amazon and Dogwise.

AmazonBook

Assumptions:

  • You and your dog are physically able to perform the tricks.
  • You are tall enough, and/or your dog is short enough to move between your legs for the leg weave trick.
  • You are motivated to learn!

Instructional Methods:

  • A PowerPoint presentation covering each trick with supporting pictures, as well as a video of each behavior.
  • A quiz at the completion of each trick for a total of five quizzes.
  • A final exam at the end of the course.
  • This is an entirely web-based course with no face-to-face meetings.
  • You will work at your own pace within the time limit permitted for this course.

Homework:

Students will submit individual videos for the five tricks they’ve trained (for the For Credit option only).

What I expect from you:

  • Follow the steps taught for each trick. Don’t skip steps.
  • Maintain momentum in working through this course.
  • Get the first three tricks done early in the course because Trick #4 and #5 take more time to train.

What you can expect from me:

  • Prompt reviews of the videos you submit within 24-48 hours (excluding weekends and holidays.)
  • Responses to your questions, as needed.

Continuing Education Units:

Alternative Reinforcement: Utilizing the Premack Principle in Animal Training

September 20, 2025 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Premack Principle in Dog TrainingPremack Principle in Dog Training

Sometimes referred to as “treat training,” positive reinforcement is a behavior modification technique that involves adding a reinforcing stimulus to increase the probability that a behavior will occur. Regarded as an easy and effective training technique, positive reinforcement often includes some type of item – a treat – that an animal is given after they’ve completed a desirable behavior. However, the use of food as a reinforcer is not always effective or practical, particularly in working settings or with animals that are less motivated by food. This can lead to owners or animal handlers abandoning positive reinforcement methodology in favor of another modification technique or stopping training altogether. The Premack Principle states that a behavior can be used to reinforce another behavior. In other words, the “reinforcing stimulus” does not have to be a treat but can be a behavior, such as an activity or the opportunity to do something enjoyable. This talk will introduce the Premack Principle, current research on the Premack Principle, and some ways the Premack Principle can be utilized in applied settings.

Speaker: Lauren Brubaker, PhD

The talk will cover a variety of topics including:

  • Definition of Premack Principle
  • Current research on the Premack Principle
  • Use of Premack Principle in training
  • Using other reinforcing stimuli outside of food

Recorded and now available as a recording.

Cost: $25.00 USD

Behavior Adjustment Training For Reactive Dogs

September 12, 2025 By Cheryl Aguiar |

Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT) for Reactive Dogs

Speaker: Grisha Stewart, MA, CPDT-KA, KPACTP

Description: Behavior Adjustment Training for dogs (BAT) is method to reduce reactivity by giving dogs socially acceptable ways to communicate their needs. This lecture will provide the student with a solid understanding of the history and science behind the BAT method and knowledge of the application of BAT (“how to”). A downloadable document is available along with videos showing the student exactly how to apply BAT with reactive dogs.

Excerpt-

BAT Takes a Functional Approach
When the dog does a problem behavior, it is usually because an event in their
environment, an environmental cue, triggers the dog to want or need something.
Fulfillment of the need or want that is triggered by the environmental cue is called the
functional reward. Here’s the sequence:
Environmental Cue – Behavior – Functional Reward
So the functional reward for behaviors done after seeing a steak are the eating of the
steak. The functional reward of behaviors done after spotting the squirrel is getting
closer to / chasing the squirrel.
