Canine Massage Therapist (CMT) Diploma

There are three required courses and 40 required Case Studies necessary to earn your Diploma/Certificate in Canine Massage Therapy. Learn how to properly perform canine massage safely and effectively. The CMT Diploma is Certified by Treetops and accredited by the IACC.

CANINE ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY COURSE

Prerequisites: None

Purpose: To understand the relationship between how the canine body is composed, how it works and the impact massage therapy will have on these systems.

Requirements:

  • Must complete all homework assignments and obtain a minimum mark of 75% on the examination.
  • There are 4 required texts. Click here for more information
  • Live class meets twice weekly for 90 minutes for six weeks.
  • The anatomy and physiology exam will be closed book and will consist of 30 multiple choice questions, 4 short answer questions worth 5 points each and two essay questions worth 25 points each. The exam will be compiled from all the course materials including diagrams.

Course Info: Detailed training in canine anatomy and physiology; canine biomechanics and kinesiology; understanding the relationship between anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology and massage therapy in dogs. The course involves the use of three textbooks used by the Veterinary Nursing Program in the U.K. and 18 hours of classroom instruction. The course is designed to give the students the necessary information in order to understand the relationship between how the body is composed, how it works and the impact massage therapy will have on these systems. Knowledge level upon successful completion on the course will be equivalent to that of a Veterinary Nurse/Technician.

INTRODUCTORY CANINE MASSAGE COURSE

Prerequisites: Canine Anatomy and Physiology or Advanced Standing

Purpose: To learn when, how and why to apply canine massage in a safe and positive environment.

Requirements:

  • Must complete all homework assignments and obtain a minimum mark of 75% on the examination.
  • Live class meets once weekly 90 minutes for twelve weeks.
  • Written final exam is comprised of 50 multiple choice questions related to the theory of canine massage as well as a practical exam where students will demonstrate assigned massage strokes (student will send in video homework).

Course Info: Students will learn all the relevant Swedish massage therapy strokes; history and theory of massage; definition and purpose of massage for canines; creating a positive environment for massage; physiological effects of massage for canines; psychological effects of massage for canines; contraindications to massage for canines; assessment and treatment protocols for canines; an introduction to hydrotherapy for canines; canine biomechanics and kinesiology; case studies of common canine soft tissue issues. Students will be provided with a comprehensive manual and an instructional video. The video provides details on the assessment procedures – visual, palpation and gaiting including the impact different surfaces will have on the gait, the creation of a positive and safe working environment, all the massage strokes, a complete therapeutic massage session and a stretch routine. Each class contains video demonstrations.

ADVANCED CANINE MASSAGE COURSE

Prerequisites: Canine Anatomy and Physiology AND Introductory Canine Massage Course

Purpose: To learn specialized massage skills to deal with a wide variety of health issues. In addition, you will be given assignments and guidance of your case studies to enhance your learning.

Requirements:

  • Must complete all homework assignments and obtain a minimum mark of 75% on the examination.
  • Live class meets once weekly 90 minutes for ten weeks.
  • Written final exam is comprised of 50 multiple choice questions related to the theory of canine massage as well as a practical exam where students will demonstrate assigned massage strokes (student will send in video homework).

Course Info: The advanced canine massage course develops specialized massage skills to deal with a wide variety of health issues. Students will be introduced to the following specialized massage skills – acupressure, sports massage, lymphatic drainage massage, reflexology and the use of colour therapy. The course also introduces students to effective business development and sustainability skills and provides a wide variety of information on small business resources available through local, regional and national governments and financial institutions.  The course also helps students perform 40 case studies.

What you can expect in this Course:

  • Students must successfully complete the Canine Anatomy and Physiology Course AND the Introductory Canine Massage Course before enrolling in the Advanced Canine Massage Course.
  • Fifteen hours of online instruction over ten weeks in the advanced canine massage course that develops specialized massage skills to deal with a wide variety of health issues. It also helps students prepare for opening their own clinic. Finally, it is an opportunity for students to receive assistance in completing the case study requirements in order to complete the certification criteria.
  • DVD for Certification students with all massage techniques
  • Students will be provided with a comprehensive manual with all information and massage techniques.
  • Diploma from the International Animal Care College.
  • Credit toward the Canine Massage Therapy Certification
  • Eligible to apply for membership in the Associate Professional Pet Care Specialist (APPCS)

Case Studies: Successfully complete at least four (4) massages on ten (10) different canines for a total of forty (40) massages within twenty-four (24) months of successfully completing the canine massage course. Case studies are completed as part of homework for both the Intro and Advanced Massage courses.

Instructor: Sigle (Sheila) Skeries has an Honours Bachelor of Arts in educational psychology with 20 years teaching experience and over 30 years experience in the animal industry. A successful junior career on the hunter / jumper circuit in Ontario and throughout the USA followed by upper level Eventing training in England, qualification as a British Horse Society Intermediate Instructor, and the management of equine facilities in breeding, racing, training and showing ensures a well rounded and knowledgeable approach not only to rehabilitation but the specific needs and demands of a wide variety of disciplines. Sigle’s canine partners are St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs and they participate in a number of canine activities including tracking, agility, freestyle and trick training. Her qualifications in therapeutic massage have been secured through training at The Complementary Therapies School in Gerrards Cross, England and successful completion of the ITEC licensing examinations. She is a member of the British Complementary Medicine Association, Independent Professional Therapists International and the Guild of Complementary Practitioners. Sigle has successfully completed her training in Herbal Medicine through the East West School of Herbal Medicine based in Ben Lamond, California.
